FTSM was established in 1994 as the pioneer faculty of computing and information technology in Malaysia. Prior to its establishment, computing programs in UKM, was offered by the Department of Computer Science which was part of the Centre for Quantitative Studies, UKM.

FTSM has a unique value offering for its students. Because of our emphasis on bringing out the best in our students, we have designed our programs and activities that meet the students needs at different stages of the student academic life. Being in a research university, FTSM takes pride in the fact that its teaching and learning activities are informed and led by its research. This enable us to develop well designed and up to date programs in computing and information technology.

Besides the formal courses, students in FTSM are also exposed to community and industry issues via special interest groups (SIGs). These SIGs act as a platform where students can hone their technical skills as well as their soft skills under the guidance of appointed advisors. Currently there are 11 SIGs at FTSM including Programming Challenges, Open Source Community, Robot Soccer and Mobile Apps.

Students in FTSM will also have the opportunities to get involved in entrepreurship tracks thus enabling them to become technopreneurs. The ever changing needs of the industry pose some challenges for fresh graduates in computing and information technology. Realizing this, at FTSM, we develop our own industry readiness program that acts as a bridging program that will enable our graduates to enter directly into the job market.
