Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia had taken an early initiative by offering a number of courses based on computer science from early on in its establishment. Befitting current developments, the Computer Science Unit has been upgraded to the status of Department of Computer Science, Centre of Quantitative Studies in 1982. The department has expanded in line with developments in computer usage in the nation. The establishment of the academic programme at Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctorate levels has been carried out in stages. The same applies to the establishment of academic staff. By stages the academic staffs have had their skills upgraded for the purpose of teaching and research by pleasuring their studies at the Doctor of Philosophy level localy and overseas.
When the nation began to frame and give focus to Information Technology as one of the fields of industry in the early 1990s, the Department of Computer Science was once again upgraded in status. On 1st October 1994, the Faculty of Information Science and Technology (Fakulti Teknologi dan Sains Maklumat [FTSM]) was established with an academic staff of around 40 persons. This establishment was timely with the announcement of the setting up of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) by the Malaysian Government. At present, FTSM has grown and become stronger and is supported by nearly 100 lecturers with 7 of them at the level of Professor. The large number has succeeded in placing the faculty at the forefront in the field of formal educational, research and consultancy.
Today, FTSM is very proud to have succeeded in having its own complex. The FTSM complex began being used on 15th May 2001. Eventhrough the complex still has not been able to support the full requirements of FTSM, efforts to improve the facilities and space available are actively being carried out. Today FTSM has added 2 new blocks, that is block G and H which has been occupied since Febuary 2010.
