Master Programme By Research

The Faculty offers 5 types of Master Programme by Research.

  1. Master of Information Technology (Computer Science)
  2. Master of Information Technology (Management Information System)
  3. Master of Information Technology (Artificial Intelligence)
  4. Master of Information Technology (Information Technology in Industry)
  5. Master of Information Technology (Information Science)

Entry Requirement

Applicants applying for the Master’s programmes should have the following qualification:

  • A Degree in Information Technology/Computer Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or other universities approved by the Senate with a good Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA); or

  • Other relevant qualifications or experience approved by the Senate.

English Language Requirements

  1. International students are required to fulfill the English language requirement as follows:
    • Score not less than 550 in TOEFL or not less than 5.5 in IELTS for particular programme.
  2. International students who have the academic qualifications obtained from any local university approved by the Senate will be exempted from requirement (1)(a) but are required to take Ujian Kecekapan Bahasa Inggeris (UKBI) and if they do not acquire the level set by the program, the candidates are required to take and pass Modul Kemahiran Bahasa Inggeris (MKBI).

  3. Faculty/Institute may grant exceptions to the English requirement for international students from countries with English as the official language or have academic qualifications obtained from institutions that use English as a medium of instruction.

Publication Requirements for Masters by Research

A Masters by Research student is required to conduct research leading to publications of at least one peer reviewed journal and one proceeding.

The peer reviewed journal must be approved by the supervisor. In order to document completion of this requirement, students must submit the Graduate Requirement Checklist (GRC) Form when they submit the corrected thesis to the Head of Doctoral Program for initial approval.

The student must provide evidence that their papers have been submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, with the student listed as an author on the manuscript. Therefore, copies of the published paper or acceptance letter should be provided for the student’s file

Malay Language Requirement

Malay Language Courses (4 units)
All international students are required to follow two (2) Malay language courses equivalent to 4 units offered by the General Studies Centre. Exemptions can be given to candidates who have taken and passed Malay language courses organized by other bodies recognized by the UKM Senate.

Duration of Study

  • Full time (2 – 6 semesters)
  • Part time (4 – 8 semesters)

The ability to conduct research, complete their studies in the shortest period of time and translate their findings into publications, both effectively and prolifically, are the strongest measure of research competency. Therefore, graduate students must be able to demonstrate their research competency and culminates in publication of refereed journal. Graduate student research competence can be seen in their use of scholarly sources such as journal articles and conference papers in their papers and thesis. Students’ that are able to complete their studies in the shortest period and published in indexed journal can increase students’ chances of having successful graduate careers and thus improve their prospects of achieving their ultimate aim, either a faculty positions or higher positions in industry and government.
